Is Becoming a Doctor Worth it for a Woman

The wrong career move for women? According to a recent study by Yale professors Keith Chen and Judith Chevalier (as reported in a Yale SOM news report), women may be making the wrong career move if they pursue careers as doctors simply for the financial rewards. The study shows that becoming a physician assistant (PA) may be the more financially wise decision for a woman. For a man the opposite is the case. Its hard to believe, but in the twenty-first century, there is still a wage gap; male doctors make more than female doctors make on an hourly basis. But thats not the only reason, or even the primary reason, why it doesnt pay for women to become doctors. By calculating the net present value (NPV) of the revenue made by male and female doctors and physician assistants, Chen and Chevalier learned that women doctors are simply not working as many hours as their male coworkers, making it much harder to pay off their training expenses. Between the ages of 31 and 35, the average male doctor works 50 hours per week while the average female doctor works only 40. The NPV for the median male PA is $1.9 million. For a male doctor its $2.3 million. The NPV for the median female PA is $1.68 million, and for a doctor $1.67 million. Â  Accepted.com ~ Helping You Write Your Best //

Chaucer, Shakespeare, and Eunuchs - 4253 Words

Candice Mullen April 1 2013 Dr. Paul Farkas Memorial Scholarship Chaucer, Shakespeare, and Eunuchs Chaucer and Shakespeare have created literature that has lasted for centuries by no coincidental matter. Many similarities link the two men together, but I believe that the most prominent characteristic that the men share is their innovativeness. More specifically their innovative construction of gender confused characters. Dinshaw’s examination of the eunuch Pardoner in her essay â€Å"Eunuch Hermeneutics† distinguishes The Pardoner to be a partial character because of his in-between state. Chaucer and Shakespeare’s construction of partial characters reveals that we cannot trust everything to be true in fiction literature and plays on our†¦show more content†¦Ã¢â‚¬Å"What shoulde I taken keep hem for to plese/ but it were for my profit and myn ese/ I sette hem so a-werke/ by my fey/ that many a night they songen wilawey† (WOB Prologue 213-216). Her interest in these men is solely based on personal interest and is A lison’s attempt to restore wholeness within the self. Alison is in need of male companionship because she lacks a physical phallus and because she has the need for argumentation. Alison’s central argument is the superiority of marriage and the domination of women over males. Her relationships provide backup to her argumentation and an effort to restore wholeness in Alison’s character. Alison’s theme creates conflict with the other pilgrims as well. Her tale is not aimed at any one pilgrim in particular, but the reader can pick up on the discomfort the Cleric would feel as Alison sets her argument up to give victory to marriage. â€Å"And certes, if ther were no seed ysowe/ virginitee, thane wherof should it growe† (WOB Prologue 71-72). Not only is virginity second to marriage, but also exclusive to it and dependent on it. Her argument is complex and contradictive. She says that virginity would not exist if it were not for marriage and sexual acts. If one man and one woman were to marry and remain celibate they offer nothing but the addition of two more

Comparing Museacutee des Beaux Arts and Life Cycle of...

Comparing Musà ©e des Beaux Arts and Life Cycle of Common Man Musà ©e des Beaux Arts and Life Cycle of Common Man share a common theme, though the imagery they use to express it is quite different. Both poems have the theme of life goes on or life stops for no one. The difference in imagery is the difference between the general and the specific. I believe that the theme of both poems lies in the same vein, but they take different paths to its development. Auden speaks more about society in general; then, he gives an interpretation of a painting as an example. On the other hand, Nemerov expresses the theme through the life cycle of one man, but is this one man--everyman? The they of Audens poem? In the first thirteen†¦show more content†¦This really is not the case because they are both part of the same essential experience. The only difference is the distance they have traveled down lifes path. While the aged are reverently, passionately waiting / For the miraculous birth . . . the children go on about their play, thinking of all the days ahead while the aged sit waiting and thinking about all the days behind. The only difference between the aged and the children at this point in life is their perspective. Instead of continuing on about the subtle differences in life, Auden goes back to how life goes on everywhere no matter what. He moves out of the realm of people and into the ambiguous areas of there and the world of animals: Anyhow in a corner, some untidy spot / Where the dogs go on with their doggy life and the torturers horse / Scratches its innocent behind on a tree. He is stating that no matter what is happening around you somewhere in the world life is going on regardless of events good or bad. This human experience that we are all in is an all-encompassing event that will continue along its ineffable course until its conclusion. Auden then makes a shift from the general to the very specific by using Brueghels Icarus as an example of his point. He describes the painting very well†¹even if you have never seen it, you could understand what is happening in the

Why I hate Lady Gaga. by Lady Gaga free essay sample

My taste in music is pretty broad in my opinion. My CD collection does not only fit into one type of music genre. I enjoy listening to hard rock bands such as Guns N Roses, Nirvana, and dont even get me started on my obsession with The Smashing Pumpkins. Other rock bands I am fond of are Fall Out Boy and My Chemical Romance. But you would also be able to catch me rocking out to the Jonas Brothers on many occasions. As far as hip hop goes I love the Black Eyed Peas, Drake ane Lil Wayne. And who doesnt enjoy some good old bubble gum pop every now and then. Like the A-Teens, Hillary Duff, and Aly and A.J. And older music is always good to listen to like Queen, The Beatles (of course), and Led Zepplin. But even in the midst my musical taste, I find myself growing to hate one specific artist the more I hear her music. We will write a custom essay sample on Why I hate Lady Gaga. by Lady Gaga or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page And she is Lady Gaga. Ill admit, when I first saw her I thought she was cool. I thought she was very sure of what type of artist she wants to be, I thought she was original, and I thought her music and beats were catchy. But to me, thats as far as her music goes. Its catchy. And that is all. When someone says I want my fans to remember me for my music and I hope it gives them a sense of belonging when they felt like they didnt, I would think of an artist like The Beatles, or Radiohead, or even Nirvana. Lady Gaga would never come to mind for me. But that is a quote she sadly said about herself. I have to say she looks more original than other pop artists out there, but her lyrics are pure trash. They are disgusting and meaningless. A song about having sex with a man and thinking about a women while your in bed with him is not something I would ever want to be remembered for. Yes, that is what Pokerface is about. I bet most of you did not know that. To me those lyrics are demeaning and filthy. And lyrics like I want to take a ride on your disco stick are atrocious. I dont know how any woman can sing a lyric like that with dignity. One of my favorite lyrics of all time is a line from a Smashing Pumpkins song The more you change the less you feel. Billy Corgan (the lead singer and lyricist of The Smahing Pumpkins) has been called a lyrical genius. In Rolling Stone Magazine, he made the cut in the top 50 best lyricists of all time. Of ALL TIME! And that one line has so much meaning and dynamic to it. You can interpret it in so many ways and most people can relate to it in some way. And I know, I know. Lady Gaga is not in a rock band. She is a pop artist. But if you ever hear her talk about her music, she talks about it like she is writing something Shakespeareian. She acts as if she deserves to be compared to Bob Dylan. I would have more respect for her if she would call her music what it is. Catchy sexually-driven pop. That is all it is. And nothing more. Just because someone wears make-up that looks like it has been put on with a paint roller, wears clothes that look like the sewing machine has blown up, and never smiles does not make them a real artist. To me, music is about self expression. Lyrics are supposed to be poetry. And I know what Lady Gaga is trying to express when she says Stop calling, stop calling, I dont want to talk anymore. It means she does not want to talk to her boyfriend while she is at a club. Not exactly a deep lyric in my book. I have yet to hear a Lady Gaga song that has a true, meaningful lyric in it. This is just my opinion. So please do not eat me alive if you like Lady Gaga.
